Engr. Omowumi Olaiya

Proprietress, Silver Spring International School · Engineer · Tutor · Entrepreneur · Convener, The Great Nigerian Show

Some people build structures. Engr. Omowumi Olaiya builds people — and then teaches them to build.

Her formation began at Abeokuta Grammar School, Abeokuta, Ogun State, one of the country's storied institutions, where the habits that still define her — curiosity, order, and an unwillingness to leave work half done — were first set. From there she proceeded to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, where she trained as an engineer and learned to look at every problem as a system that can be understood, measured and improved.

Engineering gave her the method; teaching gave her the calling. As a tutor she discovered that the same rigour that solves a technical problem can unlock a struggling child, and she has spent the years since applying it in classrooms — patient with the slow learner, demanding of the gifted one, and convinced that no Nigerian child is short of capacity, only of the right environment.

“Greatness is not rare. Access to it is. Our work is to make greatness easy.”

That conviction became Silver Spring International School, Osogbo, which she founded and leads as Proprietress. Under her hand the school has grown from early education through nursery and primary to a full secondary programme, with a working science laboratory, competitive clubs, cultural celebrations and a teaching staff she personally mentors. She is as likely to be found reviewing a scheme of work as receiving a parent at the gate.

Beyond the school, she is an entrepreneur with diverse interests, building ventures that create work for young people and demonstrate to her students that enterprise is a legitimate, honourable path.

Her most public initiative is The Great Nigerian Show, which she conceived and convenes to celebrate Nigerians at home and in the diaspora who are impacting the world positively — and to propagate the good narration about the country she is proudly from. It is, in essence, her classroom philosophy carried onto a national stage: show people their own excellence, and they will live up to it.

Engineer. Teacher. Builder of institutions. A proud Nigerian who insists the country's best story is still being written — and that some of its authors are sitting in her classrooms today.
